Ethiopian Airline see green in appearing green (Planted 7 million trees)

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

Ethiopian airlines has already planted 7.5 million trees in Ethiopia, one for each passenger flown since 2005 at no extra charge to their customers.

More Information avilable here

You'd like to choose the most eco-friendly airline, a company that goes above and beyond the others to fly efficiently, burn less fuel and maybe even offset its carbon.
But does an airline like that exist?
Airlines have gone to great lengths has to operate efficiently in their struggle to survive, but some companies are touting practices they hope will cast them as greener than the rest. What's hype and what's really effective in reducing an airlines fuel emissions?
The Greenest Airline
Since the price of fuel represents as much as 40% of an airline's expenses, the industry has been on a quest for new technology and operating techniques to fly in a more efficient manner.
But if every airline is doing it, how can one company set themselves apart from their competitors and declare themselves the most green airline?
Virgin America offers the opportunity to voluntarily buy carbon offsets based on the length of your flight and Delta offers an option to plant a tree with each listing at a cost of $5.50 for a domestic flight.
Ethiopian airlines has already planted 7.5 million trees in Ethiopia, one for each passenger flown since 2005 at no extra charge to their customers.
But Nature Air in Costa Rica claims to be the first carbon neutral airline, and it looks like they've managed to accomplish that with carbon offsets and the use of 100% biofuel in their fleet of deHavilland Twin Otters.
But the airline many think of when discussing green initiatives in aviation, Virgin Atlantic, has an offset plan, too.
Virgin Atlantic has agreed to offset each and every one of its upper class customers limo rides to the airport by planting a few hundred trees each year. This is far short of the 59 million trees needed, according to the Guardian, to offset a year's worth of flying.
Carbon credits and offsetting are likely going to play a larger part in the airline industry, but airlines will always try to reduce their emissions.
Let's look at some of the efforts, and the impact it's having.

Newer fleet
The claim that an airline's newer airplanes make it the most green is often touted. European charter airline TUI (pronounced Tooey) highlighted its new fleet as being the greenest in the industry. But the choices for many low fare airlines are the A320 and next generation 737, both fuel efficient airplanes have seen limited changes in the past decade.
Easyjet tried to counter TUI's green claim of having the greenest fleet by making the equally suspect statement that their company was in fact more green because they flew shorter flights.
Since aircraft have a life expectancy of at least twenty years, any recent airline, or even a company that has seen significant growth, will have a younger fleet by definition. It doesn't make sense to retire an airplane sooner than 20 years just to save between 5 percent and 20 percent in fuel costs.
So when an upstart airline claims to be 25% more efficient than its competitors, you can suspect you're being greenwashed. Even on this blog we're not immune to the airline hype machine. We promoted one airline's claims just hours ago here on Gadling:
The airline operates a brand new fleet of aircraft that operate up to 25% more efficiently than other domestic fleets. During ground taxiing, their aircraft use a single engine.
Single-engine taxi
This technique is often mentioned in reports like the one above on a specific airline's efforts to save fuel as if it were a new idea. Most airlines have been taxiing on one engine whenever conditions allowed it since the late '80s. It's hardly a new effort.
There are times, however, when it isn't possible to operate on one engine, because of a heavier than usual takeoff weight, airports with a slope on the way to the end of the runway or if baggage carts and personnel are working behind the airplane after the tug is released, since the 'breakaway' force on one engine requires higher thrust which could blow people and equipment away
Still, when possible, it's an effective way to save up to a few hundred pounds of fuel per fight
Reduced speed
A typical 757 long-haul flight can only shave around 4 minutes of time if flown at Mach .82. Flying a more reasonable Mach .79 or .80 can result in close to 400 pounds less fuel burned every hour. Airlines have realized this and are adjusting flight plans accordingly.
Winglets
A company called Aviation Partners formed as a joint venture with Boeing to retrofit 737, 757 and 767 aircraft with composite 'blended winglets' that have resulted in significant savings (between 3.5 percent and 5 percent lower fuel burn and emissions) for airlines.
Constant Descent Arrivals
Airplanes are much more efficient at higher altitudes, so any descents that begin early, and then level off at a lower altitude during the approach burns more fuel. The typical 'stair-step' arrivals in the New York area, for example are designed by ATC to keep traffic in specific corridors.

With GPS equipped airplanes that can be programmed to fly a constant descent approach accurately and consistently, the FAA is looking into designing arrivals that take advantage of this new technology.
Converting just one of the lessor used arrivals into Seattle will save an estimated 175,000 gallons of fuel a month.
An added benefit is that these approaches are much quieter for the surrounding communities, which is a big reason that London has required a similar type of arrival for years.
NextGen
Using the same GPS capabilities, the FAA is working on a new air traffic control plan called NextGen, which will evolve ATC from a ground-based operation to a satellite based system of management.
In addition to improving safety and increasing capacity, this plan will allow for more direct routing for airplanes, less holding at the destination and better planning for constant descent arrivals mentioned above, resulting in less carbon emissions, fuel consumption, and noise.
It's the little things that add up
Airlines have changed the technique for pushing back from the gate. Rather than a straight back push, Delta estimated if an airplane is turned up to 70 degrees in the direction of taxi before being released by the tug, 7.6 million pounds (just over a million gallons) of fuel can be saved
Increased use of ground electrical power at the gate instead of the onboard Auxiliary Power Unit can save a similar amount and for every pound of water in the sinks and coffee makers that is reduced on a flight, American Airlines estimates it saves 14,000 gallons of fuel.
And Boeing has made changes in the next generation 737 engines this year that are said to save an extra 1% of fuel, which will benefit all future purchasers of their most popular airliner.
So when you read about fuel efficiency claims, remember that no airline can call themselves the green champion, although Nature Air in Costa Rica may deserve a gold metal at least. Every airline has been focused on saving fuel and reducing emissions because, frankly, it's in their best interest to do so.
Their efforts have resulted in some significant savings over the past four decades, in fact.
Historically, airlines are outperforming the auto industry in fuel economy improvements. In 1972 U.S. airlines traveled 15 passenger miles per gallon. That number increased to 25 mpg in 1982 and 30 mpg in 1992. Today the number is exceeding 45 passenger miles flown per gallon.
The Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 are promising up to 20% improvements in fuel efficiency emissions, so that trend will likely improve.

Zahara Jolie-Pitt and the Politics of Uncombed Hair

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

by Allison Samuels

A few years ago when actress Angelina Jolie announced she’d be adopting a 6-month-old girl from Africa, I had mixed emotions. I’ve always thought Jolie was one of the flyest chicks in the Hollywood game, but interracial adoptions can be a tricky thing no matter how fly you are.

I’d heard the horror stories around Hollywood about the adopted black children of white movie stars becoming incredibly confused about their backgrounds. For instance, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey a few years ago; Tom Cruise said his interracial son, Conner, was not a color, so the family didn’t discuss race.

Nice sentiment, but in the real world Conner is considered black. If not Cruise, then someone else will point that reality out to Connor with little hesitation. This is one major reason there has been such a hot national debate over interracial adoptions. The fear is that non-African-American parents won’t be able to raise black children with an understanding of who they are and what that means in mainstream society. Such an understanding is just as imperative as shelter and food if the child is to survive and thrive.

Up until recently, Angelina Jolie seemed to be doing a pretty decent job with Zahara Jolie Pitt—providing essential and expensive medical care, purchasing land in Zahara’s native Ethiopia with the plan to build a health center, providing a life of adventure and opportunity. Wonderful things indeed, but lately it seems Angelina has taken a page out of Tom Cruise’s book—and it all comes down to Zahara’s hair.

It’s no secret that black women and their hair have always had a very complicated relationship. In a society that values fine facial features and long silky, straight hair, African-Americans' sometimes kinky, fragile, and unruly hair can be the bane of a black woman’s existence if she allows it.

Hair is often the first thing others notice, be it the texture, length, fullness, or shine. In the African-American community it can also tell a story. It can indicate your background, lineage, and social standing. From slavery until today, skin color and hair texture played a large part in how the overall society viewed blacks and ultimately the way African-Americans saw themselves.

So a black woman has two options: either submit to damaging relaxers and hot combs, or keep hair natural—while still ensuring that it’s well conditioned, well combed, and in place. There are many legacies of black hair in America, but the most enduring is this: even those who eschew pursuing European-looking hair still take a tremendous amount of pride in looking well groomed and put together, and still need to devote time and energy to achieve this effect.

It’s no wonder that African-American women are the largest consumers of hair products, spending close to a billion dollars each year to control their hair. These same women passed down these perceived notions about hair to their daughters. They usually begin hot combing and braiding the child’s hair to take the kink out at an early age.

But even the mothers who spare the hot comb still have to put time and effort into keeping hair healthy: Any self-respecting black mother knows that she must comb, oil, and brush her daughter’s hair every night. This prevents the hair from matting up, drying out, and breaking off. It also prevents any older relatives from asking them why you’re neglecting your child and letting her run around looking like a wild woman. Having well-managed hair is not just about style, it’s about pride, dignity, and self-respect. Keeping your daughter’s hair neat is an unspoken rule of parental duties that everyone in the community recognizes and respects.
.
Hair that is nice, neat, and cared for also gives African-American girls the confidence that they can fit into the world at large without being seen as completely different. One truism of childhood is that nothing is more important than being like everyone else. Well, as like everyone else as you can be with Hollywood parents. But not all people will recognize Zahara as the child of movie royalty. To many, she’ll be just a black little girl—and a black girl with bad hair at that.

In recent pictures it's clear Angelina Jolie hasn’t taken the time to learn or understand the long and painful history of African-American women and hair. If she had I can’t imagine she would continue to allow Zahara to look like she has in the past few months. Photos of Zahara show the 4-year-old girl sporting hair that is wild and unstyled, uncombed and dry. Basically: a “hot mess.’’

African American blogs and forums such as Media Takeout, Black Hair Media and even mainstream outlets like TMZ have been on fire the past few weeks demanding to know why Angelina won’t just comb Zahara’s hair? Each blog receives hundreds of e-mails every time they run a picture of the little girl with her hair uncombed. "I just hope that they realize she has different hair needs and find someone black who can keep her hair looking good,” said a commenter on Bossip.com. "Angie, if you can’t comb hair then get someone who can. This is ridiculous now. Your hair is always in place and so is Shiloh’s. Why does Zahara have to always look like she just woke up?" writes a commenter on TheFabLife.com.

This is not to say that critics want Angelina to perm or hot comb Zahara's hair. Not that 4-year-old African-American girls don't get their hair hot combed. I certainly did every Saturday for Sunday morning church. Instead, the majority of those writing in to the blogs say they just want Angelina to brush and oil the little girl's hair so it will be healthy and in shape.

Elaine Jones of the blog Womanist Musings says she’s been amazed at the number of angry e-mails directed at Jolie on this issue. “I mean I don’t deny Zahara could look better, but readers seemed to be mad that Angelina seems to have such little regard for something blacks consider sacred,” says Jones. "They act as though they take it personally that Zahara’s hair looks so bad and think it’s embarrassing for all black people. I think they expected more from Angelina.’’

Lisa Brown, a 35-year-old secretary from Dayton, Ohio, says she felt compelled to comment online about Zahara’s hair because she’s followed Zahara since the day Angelina brought her home.

“It just hurts my heart because I know that little girl won’t be even able to look at her baby pictures without being perplexed at how she looks and why,’’ says Brown. “She doesn’t know any better now, but she will once she gets into school and sees other little girls that look like her with combed and neat hair. She’s going to feel like the odd man out.’’

Brown says she worries that the little girl will one day resent her adopted mother.

“It would be a shame but not surprising,’’ says Brown. “Why adopt her if you’re not going to do your best to raise her to be confident and fulfilled. Other cultures might think this is petty, but trust me it isn’t for a young black girl.’’

In sharp contrast, Madonna, who adopted a little African girl earlier this year from Malawi, makes sure her daughter’s hair is either braided with beads or bows. Recent photos show the little girl modeling neatly done cornrows with white beads at the bottom—a la Venus and Serena Williams.

If Jolie needed even more inspiration, all she has to do is look toward the White House. First daughters Malia and Sasha don’t have stick-straight hair, but they do have their hair done in varying styles from day to day. Malia favors simple twists on her natural hair that allow her to run, swim, and play without worrying her hair will revert (puff up or kink up). Youngest daughter Sasha either wears her hair in braids, a ponytail, or loose curls.

In fairness, Jolie did hire Beyonce’s hairdresser Kim Kimble a few years back to care for Zahara’s hair, (a bit of overkill if you ask me—particularly since Beyonce mostly wears wigs and weaves) and Pitt has even said in interviews that they use Carol’s Daughter, a black hair-care line. But it seems the constant travel the family’s been doing over the past year has put issues like grooming on the back burner. For the record, Jolie’ daughter Shiloh isn’t exactly looking like much time is being given to her hair either. But she isn’t a little black girl being judged by mainstream standards.

There are those who say there is nothing wrong with Zahara’s hair at all, that her hair is in its natural state and that’s just fine. I say natural hair---afro, dreads, etc. is fine, if it’s maintained regularly or when the child is old enough to make that decision for herself. Until then, the child’s parents are responsible for their general care and upkeep. Zahara is not even old enough to know that her hair looks dry and damaged as it stands straight up on her head. But there will come a day when this beautiful little African girl will understand what it means to be an African-American woman in this society and realize unlike her younger sister, hers is not a wash-and-go world.

Ethiopian Teen sentenced to 14 months of prison in arson, bomb-plot case

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

In front of roughly 40 family members and friends Wednesday, an 18-year-old former Springbrook High School student was sentenced to more than a year in prison for setting fires and plotting to set off explosives at the Silver Spring school in April.

During Yonata Getachew's sentencing in Montgomery County Circuit Court, it was clear the troubled student had a supportive family, a timid personality and zero prior encounters with the criminal or juvenile justice system.

But, as prosecutors argued, he also held a grudge against school counselors who he felt unjustly let him toil in special-education classes and had a temper that flared up when he felt slighted.

"This is a very complex picture presented," said Circuit Court Judge Michael D. Mason before sentencing Getachew, of the 11500 block of Sutherland Hill Way in Silver Spring, to 14 months in prison.

"I have seen people commit crimes that need to be punished even if they are good people," he added.

Getachew, dressed in a black sports coat, white dress shirt and black dress pants, spoke briefly Wednesday and showed no reaction when sentenced.

"I am very sorry," Getachew said softly. "I would never hurt anybody."

Getachew pleaded guilty to first-degree arson, first-degree conspiracy to commit arson and two counts of reckless endangerment for his involvement in setting two fires in the boys' bathrooms at Springbrook in April and for attempting to rupture a natural gas line in a classroom.

He will receive credit for 161 days already served at the Montgomery County Detention Center and, after his prison sentence, he will have five years of supervised probation.

His codefendant, 17-year-old Anthony Torrence, was charged in juvenile court and received probation. The names of juveniles charged with crimes are typically withheld, but Torrence's name has been published because he was originally charged as an adult.

The students planned to puncture a gas pipe near the stage in the school's auditorium and throw an incendiary device into the room to cause an explosion after gas filled the room, according to charging documents filed in Montgomery County District Court. They planned to throw a nail bomb into the principal's office and a bag of rocks at a school counselor, according to court documents.

Getachew and Torrence were arrested April 28 after police responded to a report of the bathroom fires and Torrence admitted the plot to an educational facilities officer at the school.

Getachew's attorney, David Putzi of Glen Burnie, argued that his client's actions were the result of a long-held frustration with his academic progress that was provoked when he failed a test that would place him in regular English classes. Getachew had been involved in an Individualized Education Program for students with learning disabilities.

It was after he failed the test that he began to hold ill will toward the school and when he began to plot along with Torrence, who Getachew had only known a few weeks prior to their April 28 arrest, Putzi said.

Torrence's confession made their discussions seem more severe than their actions, which only amounted to $88 in damage, Putzi said in court.

"This case took a life of its own because of statements from Anthony Torrence," said Putzi, who asked Mason for a sentence of only probation, the minimum under the sentencing guidelines.

But Torrence's statements corroborated what Getachew told investigators and Getachew's behavior at school did not corroborate what Putzi and the Getachew family said about his personality, prosecutors said.

"Honesty, obedience, not using foul language: That's the side portrayed to the family, and I'm sure that's all they saw," said Assistant State's Attorney Peter Feeney, who prosecuted the case. "But there's another side to him."

That side included skipping classes, "lying through his teeth" to investigators after his arrest, forging hall passes and throwing profanity-laced tantrums when reprimanded, Feeney said, citing letters submitted to Mason from a security officer at the school and an assistant principal.

Getachew intended to do more harm than Putzi gave him credit for, Feeney said, noting that there was visible damage to the natural gas lines beneath the science classroom at the school.

In the wake of the arrests, several students missed up to a week of class in fear of being harmed, the counselor Getachew targeted left the school system and Springbrook has seen an increase in students transferring to other schools in the Northeast Consortium cluster, according to the letter from the assistant principal, which Feeney read in court.

"He really achieved his goal in instilling fear in those he dislikes," the letter read. "Please hold him accountable."

After the sentencing, his mother, Ayu Getachew, was optimistic her son could live up the promise she has always seen in him, as soon as he gets out of jail.

"We are looking forward to him coming back," she said on the first floor of the courthouse, with the tight-knit family of Ethiopian descent consoling each other around her. "He's going to be a great boy."

Ethiopian Activists Honored for Human Rights Campaigns

Two African activists have been named winners of a new award by the group Human Rights Watch. The Alison Des Forges Defender Award for Extraordinary Activism celebrates people from around the world who have worked through hard times to defend human rights.
Daniel Bekele is an Ethiopian human rights lawyer who fought to encourage voter education during Ethiopia's 2005 elections. As a result, he spent two and a half years in prison on political charges, accused of trying to overthrow the Ethiopian government.
Now living in Britain with his family, he says he will continue his fight for human rights in his home country. He says education is key on a continent where democracy is still developing.

"Voter education is very important in Africa because one good development we have in Africa recently is that a number of African countries are engaged in what is at least now regular elections," said Daniel Bekele.

Since Bekele's release from prison in 2008, the Ethiopian government has adopted a new law on nongovernmental organizations that makes the work of most human rights groups in Ethiopia illegal.
But he says the fight to protect human rights must go on.

"We are having it to travel a long way to ensure actual protection of these rights," he said. "Unfortunately there is a back-sliding since the political crisis in 2005."
He says the good news is that activism across Africa is growing and a brighter future may be on the horizon.

"Activism is on the rise in Africa as it is probably also evidenced by the fact that two of the four awards from Human Rights Watch this year go to Africa," said Bekele.

As Bekele points out, two of this year's four award winners are African. The second African is Mathilde Muhindo from the Democratic Republic of Congo. She works to help victims of rape in eastern Congo, a region plagued by widespread and systematic use of sexual violence by government troops and armed groups.

Human Rights Watch spokesman Tom Porteous says her work has changed women's rights in the country.

"She led a coalition of local women's organizations in Congo to advocate for a new comprehensive law dealing with the problem of sexual violence," said Tom Porteous. "And in fact as a result of her dedication and her work, that advocacy campaign has been successful."

Porteous says because of the work of activists like Bekele and Muhindo even countries that he calls 'failed states' have vibrant civil societies.

Abuse of Domestic Workers in the Gulf (Ethiopian Women)

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

Al-Jazeera English aired a story today about the abuse domestic workers suffer in the Gulf. The report included an interview with a women who came to work as a maid in the UAE from East Africa (her accent is Ethiopian, as far as I can tell). The maid was daily abused by her female employer for two years, from the second day of her employment and until a doctor notice her multiple injuries in a periodic medical checkup. The maid was beaten, burned with scolding water and hot iron, and was denied medical treatment for her injuries. She was forced to have sex with another maid, as their sadistic employer filmed them. The employer then used the video to blackmail the maid into not going to the police, saying that “the law is in her favor”.

Simel Isheb of the International Labor Organization told AJE that despite ministerial decrees across the region, domestic workers are still not protected by labor laws. Isheb added that the sponsorship system creates total dependency, which leads to “total vulnerability, and opens the door wide for abuse and exploitation”.

Ethiopian Airlines to commence flights to Sierra Leone

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News The home-based staff of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Monday 28th September, 2009 held fruitful discussions with the Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr. Girma Wake on plans for the Ethiopian Airlines carrier to commence flights to Freetown. The meeting was held at the Office of the Ethiopian Airlines head office in Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa. The meeting was necessitated against the backdrop that Ethiopian Airlines has slated to commence regular flights to neighbouring Republic of Guinea and Liberia starting 1st October, 2009 leaving out Sierra Leone. The Ethiopian Airlines Chief Executive was informed that for reasons of proximity it would be better if Freetown was brought on board the West African arrangement. Responding, Mr. Wake assured the staff members that their representation will be given serious consideration even though at the moment his airline is constrained with the availability of flights and personnel. He added however that the situation would be remedied very soon. In this vain, he explained that arrangements are underway for Ethiopian Airlines to commence flights to Freetown by mid November or the first week of December latest. He further stated that the Airline would start with two flights weekly and it would be increased to thrice weekly. The route would be Addis Ababa-Lagos-Lome-Freetown. The leg from Addis Ababa to Lome would be operated by Ethiopian Airlines while the Lome to Freetown route would be under the auspices of ASKAI Airlines also operated by Ethiopian Airlines. ASKAI Airlines is operating a 737 New Generation Jet. Abdul Karim Koroma Information Attaché Sierra Leone Embassy Addis Ababa Ethiopia Cell: +251 910853476

why is africa poor?

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News
just as american blacks blame whites for their failures, africans deny responsibility for the misery they bring on themselves. By william robertson boggs Black africa is the poorest part of the world by far. It is in africa that we find countries like zaire, ethiopia, chad, and the sudan, where gross national product per person is less than $200 a year. The 41 nations of sub-saharan africa produce no more wealth than the tiny country of belgium, which has only one forty-fifth as many people. Of all of the region’s economic production, white-run south africa accounts for three quarters. Numbers like these mean that africans live in misery so desperate that americans can scarcely imagine it. Every year, thousands of africans die of starvation. In bad years, hundreds of thousands starve. Even in tropical parts of africa untouched by famine, as many as one third of all children die before the age of five. One in a hundred births kills the mother. Malaria, sleeping sickness, hepatitis, leprosy, and aids are rampant. Nevertheless, the population of africa grows faster than that of any other region of the world. The total number of children, grand children, and great-grand children that the average american woman will have is 14. The equivalent figure for the average african woman is 258! despite the ravages of disease, starvation, and inter-tribal warfare, africa’s population increases by more than three percent a year. At that rate, populations can double in 20 years. Standard explanations why is africa poor? the standard explanations blame anyone but the africans. Colonization by whites, it is said, kept africa poor. The slave trade depleted the continent and impoverished it. Multinational corporations plundered it. Just as blacks in america seek to explain their own failings by blaming them on whites, africans explain their own poverty by blaming europe. Recently, this is how a broadcast on somalia’s state-owned radio attacked the bbc for reporting uncomplimentary facts: the bbc’s day dream … was to succeed once again in looting at will the abundant natural resources both on land and at sea in the third world, particularly in africa. The colonial bogeyman still lives. The argument that colonization accounts for africa’s poverty is so easily refuted that it should have gone out of currency long ago. That it has not can be attributed only to the apparently endless capacity of whites to accept arguments that paint them as villain. There is no reason to think that, left to themselves, africans would have risen from the primitive conditions in which europeans found them. To believe that colonization thwarted the economic development of africa is to believe that indigenous societies were on their way towards prosperity but were brutally shoved off course by europeans. In fact, african societies south of the sahara that had not had contact either with europeans or with middle eastern traders showed no signs of modern development. No pre-contact african society had devised a written language or had discovered the wheel. None had a calendar, or built multi-story buildings. No african had learned how to domesticate animals. The smelting of iron was widespread, as was fire-hardened pottery, but the continent did not produce anything that could be called a mechanical device. Africans had no concept of the biological origins of disease, and attributed personal misfortunes to the work of evil spirits. Slavery was widely practiced, and deeply rooted in africa long before the arrival of europeans. There is no reason to think that, left to themselves, africans would have risen from the primitive conditions in which europeans found them. The european slave trade, though unquestionably harmful to africa, was hardly the depopulating scourge it is often made out to be. When the 15th century portuguese began sailing down the coast, they met long-established slave traders keen to sell off surpluses. Europeans almost never went on slaving expeditions into the interior. They bought slaves from dealers, which means that slaves taken from africa were first enslaved by other africans. At the same time, europeans introduced two new world staples that could be stored — cassava and corn — revolutionizing the african food supply. The sudden increase in population more than made up for losses to the european slave trade which, in any case, ended by the middle of the 19th century. It was trade with europeans that introduced modernity to iron-age africa. Far from hobbling and holding the continent back, colonization laid the foundations for whatever evidence of economic progress can now be found in africa. It was europeans who built roads and rail lines, introduced piped water, schools and telecommunications, and built national administrations. Nothing suggests that africans would have achieved any of this on their own. There is no question but that life for africans improved steadily under colonization. By the 1960s, when most of africa became independent, the region exported food. Now, it devours more than $1 billion a year in western food aid, and thousands still starve. Pre-colonial africans it is possible to argue that africans might have been better off if they had been left entirely alone. This is to take a romantic view of the disease, tribal warfare, slavery, and ignorance that were widespread on the continent. Moreover, no african group that has glimpsed the possibilities of western progress has opted to return to purely african primitivism. This suggests that africans themselves would rather have the benefits of western technology than do without them. Given that people naturally yearn for medical advance and material progress, colonization was an obvious and striking benefit to africa.

EGYPT: Cleric calls for 'Friday of anger' against Al Aqsa violations

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

October 6, 2009 | 10:43 am The head of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, Yusuf Al Qaradawi, is urging Egyptians to turn this Friday into a nationwide day of anger against the "Israeli practices at the Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem." The Qatar-based cleric flew to Egypt from Doha on Monday to deliver a speech at the Egyptian Journalists' Syndicate in Cairo, where he condemned the Arab governments' silence towards the "violation of Al Aqsa's holiness" by Israeli settlers and occupation forces. Tensions erupted in the area known as Al Haram Al Sharif to Muslims and the Temple Mount to Jews last week when a group of non-Muslims entered the compound, which is the third holiest venue in Islam and the most important in Judaism. While Israeli authorities said that the group was composed of French tourists, Palestinians believed that they were Israeli extremists entering the mosque in celebration of the Jewish Sukkot festival. Further confrontations took place Sunday as tens of Palestinians entered the mosque overnight amid rumors that larger numbers of Israelis will be allowed to enter the mosque, before Israeli forces shut down the holy site. Muslims under 50 years old were later banned from praying inside the mosque and on Monday, thousands of Jewish worshipers prayed at the Western wall below Al Aqsa for religious celebrations. Qaradawi, who is well-known for his controversial fatwas, urged all Egyptian clerics to dedicate Friday prayer speeches to showing solidarity with Al Aqsa and asking Muslims to gather for peaceful protests afterward. The outspoken cleric is famous for once calling Jews a profligate, cunning and arrogant band of people. He has long been in support of Palestinian suicide bombers and previously said that the Holocaust was God's punishment to Jews for their corruption. Qaradawi wasn’t the only cleric to criticize Arab regimes for their "passiveness" against "Israeli violations." A number of religious scholars said that the Arab and Muslim world should rush to defend the sacred Aqsa from repeated "Zionist assaults." --Amro Hassan in Cairo Photo: Yusuf Al Qaradawi. Temple Mount access restricted for fifth day (By Ethiopian JEWS)

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News Despite concerns that the arrest of the leader of the Islamic Movement's northern branch, Sheikh Ra'ad Salah, would spark further unrest, the city was completely quiet yesterday. Still, the police maintained high alert in the Old City, East Jerusalem and West Jerusalem. Entry to the Temple Mount today, for the fifth day in a row, will be permitted to Muslim men 50 or over and Muslim women of any age. Jews and tourists will not be allowed to enter. The same rules will apparently apply tomorrow, with thousands of Muslims seeking to pray on the Temple Mount and masses of Jews coming to the Western Wall, immediately below the Mount, for the last day of Sukkot. "This is an event with potential for escalation," a police official said. Advertisement The number of Muslims seeking entry to the Temple Mount is expected to swell following a call by Sheikh Yussuf Al-Qaradawi of Egypt, considered one of the Sunni Muslim world's great scholars, to declare Friday a "day of anger." About 75 people have been arrested since the unrest began in Jerusalem at the beginning of the week, among them 24 minors. Those arrested are suspected of a number of infractions including throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, attacking police and blocking traffic. Meanwhile, MK Michael Ben Ari (National Union) asked Attorney General Menachem Mazuz and Police Commissioner David Cohen to order an investigation for incitement to racism into the deputy head of the Islamic Movement's northern branch, Kamel Hatib. The demand came after Hatib told Army Radio: "We want a Muslim to be able to go into his mosque anytime and pray, without some cop from Ethiopia, some cushi, telling him 'you won't go in there.'" Hatib was using a derogatory term for dark-skinned person. A.T., a Border Police officer of Ethiopian origin who is involved in security on the Temple Mount and the Old City year-round, told Harretz regarding Hatib's remark: "I come to work as a professional and try to neutralize my feelings. I don't believe all Arabs think the way Hatib does." A police official said Hatib's remark "could be said to be spitting in the face." Hatib told Haaretz yesterday that he did not mean to humiliate a particular policeman. "As one who suffers from racism, I cannot use racist terms against others," he said. "My meaning was clear, that this particular policeman or security man who just came to Israel a few years ago should not tell me and other Muslims who have been the landlords for hundreds of years that they may not enter a mosque, and there is no doubt this is infuriating." Hatib, who was barred from Jerusalem this week for 14 days, has gone home to Cana in the Galilee, and is continuing his activities with Salah. Salah told Al-Jazeera in an interview: "I'll decide when I go to Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and not the Israeli occupation forces." Yesterday morning a delegation from the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee visited the mosque and met with the heads of the Waqf Islamic trust. Pamela Geller points to a Muslim Sheikh speaking at al-Aqsa Mosque, and wonders why the Obama administration is silent in face of the obvious racism. Salah’s deputy, Camel Hatib, who has been termed a “dangerous man” by former Northern District Police Chief Alik Ron, is also in Israel sights. MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari (National Union) wrote to Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, asking that an investigation be opened against Hatib for incitement to racism and violence. Hatib, interviewed on Army Radio, said, “The Al-Aksa Mosque and the Temple Mount are not holy to Jews and they are forbidden from praying there... It cannot be that an Ethiopian policeman, a Negro, will stop a Moslem from praying at the Al-Aksa Mosque.” Who is the racist? The Israeli who treats the Ethiopian policeman the same as any other citizen or the Muslim Sheikh who cannot bear the thought of answering to 'a Negro'? But don't expect anyone at the United Nations 'Human Rights Council' to investigate.

Ethiopian man was the 1st asylum seeker in Korea in 2001

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

The Korea Herald/Asia News Network Bae Hyun-jung A sharply increasing number of foreigners are turning to the courts while seeking asylum in Korea, according to the Seoul Administrative Court Wednesday (October 7). As of the end of August, 99 refugee-related cases were filed, a 10-fold rise from the 9 cases during the same period last year, said court officials. The figure was also much higher than the past yearly records - one in 2004, seven in 2005, 21 in 2006, 22 in 2007 and 15 last year. The present law allows those who were denied asylum by the Justice Ministry to appeal to the Seoul Administrative Court within three months. "As Korea's reputation in the international society has improved recently, an increasing number of foreigners came to seek refuge," said a justice ministry official. The sharp rise may also be attributable to the launch of the refugee department, newly established at the Seoul Immigration Office in May. The department, exclusively set to support refugee-related issues, has sped up the application process for asylum seekers, the official explained. "Also, most asylum seekers tend to turn to the court when denied recognition, as the expulsion measures are to be deferred until all legal processes are over," the official also said. Korea signed and joined the UN Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees back in 1992. A total of 2,413 foreigners have sought refugee status in Korea and 145 were granted asylum by the justice ministry. The first refugee to be recognised was an Ethiopian man in 2001. "Acquiring refugee status in Korea is still more complicated than in other countries," said Thona Yiombi, a Congolese refugee who was granted asylum after six years of trying, 15 interviews and two denials.

Ethiopian Muslim Population Hits 28 million & 1.57B Globally- AP (Truth is Ethiopian Muslim puplation is over 40 Million.)

News Ethiopian Muslim Population Hits 28 million & 1.57B Globally- AP By ERIC GORSKI (AP) The global Muslim population stands at 1.57 billion, meaning that nearly 1 in 4 people in the world practice Islam, according to a report Wednesday billed as the most comprehensive of its kind. The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life report provides a precise number for a population whose size has long has been subject to guesswork, with estimates ranging anywhere from 1 billion to 1.8 billion. The project, three years in the making, also presents a portrait of the Muslim world that might surprise some. For instance, Germany has more Muslims than Lebanon, China has more Muslims than Syria, Russia has more Muslims than Jordan and Libya combined, and Ethiopia has nearly as many Muslims as Afghanistan. "This whole idea that Muslims are Arabs and Arabs are Muslims is really just obliterated by this report," said Amaney Jamal, an assistant professor of politics at Princeton University who reviewed an advance copy. Pew officials call the report the most thorough on the size and distribution of adherents of the world's second largest religion behind Christianity, which has an estimated 2.1 billion to 2.2 billion followers. The arduous task of determining the Muslim populations in 232 countries and territories involved analyzing census reports, demographic studies and general population surveys, the report says. In cases where the data was a few years old, researchers projected 2009 numbers. The report also sought to pinpoint the world's Sunni-Shiite breakdown, but difficulties arose because so few countries track sectarian affiliation, said Brian Grim, the project's senior researcher. As a result, the Shiite numbers are not as precise; the report estimates that Shiites represent between 10 and 13 percent of the Muslim population, in line with or slightly lower than other studies. As much as 80 percent of the world's Shiite population lives in four countries: Iran, Pakistan, India and Iraq. The report provides further evidence that while the heart of Islam might beat in the Middle East, its greatest numbers lie in Asia: More than 60 percent of the world's Muslims live in Asia. About 20 percent live in the Middle East and North Africa, 15 percent live in Sub-Saharan Africa, 2.4 percent are in Europe and 0.3 percent are in the Americas. While the Middle East and North Africa have fewer Muslims overall than Asia, the region easily claims the most Muslim-majority countries. While those population trends are well established, the large numbers of Muslims who live as minorities in countries aren't as scrutinized. The report identified about 317 million Muslims — or one-fifth of the world's Muslim population — living in countries where Islam is not the majority religion. About three-quarters of Muslims living as minorities are concentrated in five countries: India (161 million), Ethiopia (28 million), China (22 million), Russia (16 million) and Tanzania (13 million). In several of these countries — from India to Nigeria and China to France — divisions featuring a volatile mix of religion, class and politics have contributed to tension and bloodshed among groups. The immense size of majority-Hindu India is underscored by the fact that it boasts the third-largest Muslim population of any nation — yet Muslims account for just 13 percent of India's population. "Most people think of the Muslim world being Muslims living mostly in Muslim-majority countries," Grim said. "But with India ... that sort of turns that on its head a bit." Among the report's other highlights: _ Two-thirds of all Muslims live in 10 countries. Six are in Asia (Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Iran and Turkey), three are in North Africa (Egypt, Algeria and Morocco) and one is in sub-Saharan Africa (Nigeria). _ Indonesia, which has a tradition of a more tolerant Islam, has the world's largest Muslim population (203 million, or 13 percent of the world's total). Religious extremists have been involved in several high-profile bombings there in recent years. _ In China, the highest concentrations of Muslims were in western provinces. The country experienced its worst outbreak of ethnic violence in decades when rioting broke out this summer between minority Muslim Uighurs and majority Han Chinese. _ Europe is home to about 38 million Muslims, or about five percent of its population. Germany appears to have more than 4 million Muslims — almost as many as North and South America combined. In France, where tensions have run high over an influx of Muslim immigrant laborers, the overall numbers were lower but a larger percentage of the population is Muslim. _ Of roughly 4.6 million Muslims in the Americas, more than half live in the United States although they only make up 0.8 percent of the population there. About 700,000 people in Canada are Muslim, or about 2 percent of the total population. A future Pew Forum project, scheduled to be released in 2010, will build on the report's data to estimate growth rates among Muslim populations and project future trends. A similar study on global Christianity is planned to begin next year. Washington hires Muslim consultant for foster kids

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News SEATTLE The state Department of Social and Health Services has hired a Muslim consultant to provide cultural and dietary advice to foster parents for seven children taken from the Seattle home of an Ethiopian refugee. The children were removed Thursday from their home because police are investigating a sexual assault charge against the father. Police told The Seattle Times the alleged victim is not one of the children and the father has not been arrested or charged. More than 100 members of the Seattle East African Muslim community protested Friday outside a DSHS office in Seattle against the children being placed in non-Muslim foster homes.

AL-‘ITISAAM: A Wolfe in Sheep's Clothing

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News By Abu Raas Hassan Monday, October 05, 2009 Since 2006 when the Somali conflict became well-known to me, I started a very extensive research which I shall demonstrate throughout this article. My research included reading countless number of articles, books, and as well as listening to thousands of hours of audios. In addition, I have observed much in the media concerning the missing Somali men (or boys)—some who were reported to have become the first suicide bombers that ever carried American passports. A lot of these men (or boys) had links to the Somali Diaspora in Minnesota, San Diego, Portland, Seattle, and Ohio. After researching the lives of these young men, I was stunned to find out that none of them had the traits of extremists. For this reason, I started to wonder as to exactly how these youths became so fanatical in such short-time that they would perpetrate such evil practises. Just to give a quick example, many of these youth had facebook accounts whereby they posted their pictures! Hence, I started to ask myself, ‘what terrorist puts his pictures on facebook?’…things were not adding up. In this paper, I will expose some of the elements that were a crucial to the radicalization of these youth. We should all asks ourselves the question, who sent our youth to Somalia so that they could become terrorist? Because so many people are scared of this question, I have taken it upon myself to clear this matter and to provide some tangible answers in which we may rely on. Many will rush to criticize me and call me names, but my intent in writing this is, first is, to please Allah, and then to show the true reality of certain organization within our community. In other words, I have no concern over other people feelings because our own dignity as Somali people is in great jeopardy, while also the name of our beautiful religion is tainted. SHORT HISTORY OF AL-ITIHAAD aka AL-‘ITISAAM In the early 90s when the ugly civil war erupted in Somalia, the members of the Islamic movement called, “al-Itihaad al-Islaami” held an emergency meeting on whether they should take part in the civil war or not. Interestingly, amongst the top leaders of this group at that time was nobody else but Mr. Hasan Daahir Aweys. A group of people from the members of al-Itihaad al-Islaam refused and thus were either expelled or left the group because they saw the civil war as a ‘fitnah’ (trails) between fellow Muslims. At this point it was clear that certain figures such as Mr. Bin Laden had made contact with Hasan Daahir Aweys and other elements within the al-Itihaad al-Islaami group. The evidence for this is the fact that Mr. Bin Laden himself speaks of it in some of his audios. When the civil war broke out, Mr. Aweys and his group decided however that they would join the war and thus ended up deploying their military might in what is known as the ‘Araale’ bridge. This is the first military operation that was ever conducted by al-Itihaad. What was also interesting was that their claim that this was a part of ‘global Jihad front,’ although, all parties involved in the war adhered to the Islamic tenets. This campaign miserably failed and Al-Itihaad did not achieve much progress. Almost a decade later, Mr. Hasan Daahir Aweys is back to square-one again in mobilizing his militia to successfully drive-off the warlords who controlled Southern Somalia. For the first time, he had actually completed what seemed to be a successful military campaign against his foes. But we all witnessed that it was short-lived after Aweys’ hunger for power and his eyeing other regions of Somalia caused him the biggest loss ever as the Ethiopian army once again invaded Somalia. The Ethiopians have always proofed Aweys wrong by showing that he was only capable of fighting his fellow Muslim brothers in the battlefield. As a result of Mr. Aweys weird military tactics, a new group is born. They are young; they are motivated by the whole chaos in Somalia. They look to the east for leadership, as Mr. Aweys has failed them too many times…they see Bin Laden. The appearance of this group is mostly due to that fact that people in the ‘Jihadi’ movement were fed up with Aweys as he always aligned himself with his tribe. This group calls themselves “Harakatu al-Shabab al-Mujahideen.” Mr. Aweys and others amongst his group (al-‘Itisaam) fled to Eritrea where they formed a lose alliance with many different groups including those very warlords they had once fought in the streets of Mogadishu. Aweys’ alliance included secularist who did not even support the idea of a ‘Sharee’ah state.’ This left many wondering as to what his true intentions were as one of the members of the alliance was a former war-lord named Hussien Aideed. The infamous character is responsible for the some of the worst atrocities that has ever occurred in Somali soil, yet, Mr. Aweys saw him fit for his alliance. Not only this, but Mr. Aweys made takfeer (lit: excommunication from the fold of Islam) of Hussien Aideed for supporting the government and for also saying that both countries would turn into a single country. Anyhow, Mr. Aweys led the Ethiopians into Somalia, then all of the sudden, he is in Eritrea—relaxing in one of the most beautiful cities in earth, and all this was at the expense of the blood of the innocent Somalis. President Sharif Ahmed who was once part of the Islamic Courts Union broke up with Mr. Aweys for several reasons. It was mainly due to the fact that they did not even belong to the same ideological group. Mr. Aweys is al-‘Itihaad while Sharif Ahmed is from al-Islaah. To cut the story short, Sharif took the place of old Mr. Abdullah Yusuf and successfully made the Ethiopians leave Somalia soil only leaving behind the AMISON troops that numbered 8,000. In brief moment after the Ethiopians pulled out of Somalia, Mr. Aweys shows up in Mogadishu with a smirk in his face. In matter of weeks, him and his rebellious ‘offsprings’ (i.e.al-Shabab) attacked Mr. Sharif’s government and battle continues until today. As we speak, Mr. Aweys is trying hard to unite with al-Shabab and has said this in the media several times, but only time will till their true fate. But if you ask me, I highly doubt that Bin Laden, who is the legitimate leader of al-Shabab will ever allow this to happen. The proof for this is the latest fighting that is occurring in the port city of Kismayo between Hizbul “Islam” and al-Shabab militia. COMING TO THE WEST Back to the beginning of the civil war in Somalia. Al-Itihaad or al-‘Itisaam first came to the west along with the Somali migrants. Some of them even boldly lied about their clan status so that they could be admitted as refugees to the United States. Take the example of a man by the name “Shayk” Ibrahim who was deported after government found out that he lied concerning his status. He is now in Ethiopia heading ONLF, the al-Itihaad branch. This is just one of the cases amongst many. Upon arriving in the west, they were able to use community funds to establish a chain of mosques across the west. For instance, in the United States, they were able to build mosques in Minnesota, Ohio, California and Washington. One of al-Itihaad’s representatives for the west was “Shayk” Muhammad Idrees. He was a deputy to the main leader in Somalia, Mr. Bashir Salad. Mr. Idrees is no longer in America as he has fled after his activities were detected by government radars. Many believe that Mr. Bashir Salad along with Mr. Idrees, and “Shayk” Ibrahim were behind uniting all of the mosques in American under what they called, “Golaha Imaamyada” (lit. Umbrella of Imaams). After the disappearance of Mr. Idrees from America, nobody really knows who the new deputy is, but many speculate that it is probably one of the local Imaams in either Nashville, Tennessee or Saint Paul, Minnesota. I say it is the ‘Shayk” Abdirahman in Minnesota and this is only for the blind to see. The main important thing here is the fact that this group remained a secret club in the Somali community; and for this reason, it has become diffuclt for many of us to identify who is who. CONNECTIONS BETWEEN AL-‘ITISAAM IN SOMALIA AND AL-‘ITISAAM IN AMERICA Now, you are probably wondering how such connections can be made. Allow me to demonstrate. When Mr. Hasan Daahir Aweys was exiled (or fled) to Eritrea, guess who paid for his expenses there? Yes, it was members who attended local Somali mosques around North America and perhaps they might have been running the mosques...And you know what, that money came out from the pockets of innocent Somalis who had no idea what this sinister group was up to; and that they only paid this money in good intention when they were told that money was being sent to “orphans in Somalia.” Moreover, an associate of mine called me in one late evening to share with me something very interesting. It was Mr. Hasan Daahir Aweys doing a phone conference with bunch of Somalis from North America (the phone number had an area code 612!). This is one of the famous conferences rooms where lectures are broadcasted and many attended. The conference had a moderators who would put forth questions to Mr. Aweys while others advised Mr. Aweys to be patient…one particular individual said, “O Shayk, supplicate for us.” Now, do you see the connection here? There must been over hundreds of people logged on to that conference room. It was also in this particular phone conference room that I listened to a gruesome discussion concerning some events that took place in Somalia. It was when a group of women, Mogadishu residents to be precise, were cleaning the streets, when one of these fanatics (al-Shabab) attacked them with bombs which caused them to die. So, one of the particular nights, there was much discussion in the room concerning this topic to point that some of the people showed dislike of such actions. Interestingly, an individual logs into the room while the conversation is still fresh and claims that he “had just spoken to Mogadishu and that those women who were targeted worked for the Ethiopian kuffar.” Then, many people started to say, “Maashallah.” I felt so sick to my stomach that I decided to never attend this conference room again, and that I was even more determined now to expose those who were promoting these sick ideas. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RADICALIZATION OF OUR YOUTH? With all this in mind, we shall move on to discuss how these young men became so radicalized that they would actually go thousands of miles to war ravaged Somalia in order to slay innocent Somalis. No doubt, there are individuals who are promoting extremism in the midst of our community, but by what median are they using to lure all these youth. This is very simple to explain. The youth are divided into two categories: One type of youth is those who are able to understand the Somali language easily and can listen to lectures in the Somali language. On the other hand, you have the second type of youth who can only understand the English language as they spent most of their life in the west. With regards to the first, they listen to wide number of lectures in Somali language. And I am not afraid to name the speakers. Mr. Hasan Daahir Aweys himself, Hasan Turki, Hassan Hussien Aadam, and Shayk Muhammad Abdi Umal are amongst some of the audio tapes that are widely listened to by the Somali speaking youth [who attend al-‘Itisaam controlled mosques in North America). Furthermore, all of Hasan Daahir Aweys and Hasan Turki’s lectures are underground and that they are not published openly (as both men are on FBI most wanted list). Next, Hassan Hussien Aadam is the main speaker and all time favorite for many youth because of the fact that this man enjoys a quality that no other Somali “Shayk” enjoys. He is charismatic, funny, and young. It is my personal belief that he is the most to radicalize the young Somali speaking youth—He uses all types of median to reach his audience be it, DVDs, Audio cassettes, and internet conferences (i.e. via Paltalk). In one of his audio tapes, he says that the whole World is darul Kufr, while also in another tape he claims that Saudi Arabia is the land of kufr even though Mecca and Medina are located there. Shayk Muhammad Abdi Umal on the other hand is also one who enjoys the support of large audience. Many youth are fond of his lectures in which he preached Jihad and by the way, most of his lectures with regards to this topic are pre-dated in the early 90s. In the past couple of months he has become very critical of the way al-Shabab and other fanatics in Somalia are operating, however the case, many Somali youth are still being lured to listen to his old recorded lectures and because they are widely accessible through audio recordings and internet. One of the main reasons for his split with this group whom he once called “mujahideen” is that he feared the Kenya government as there was a lot of reports indicating that he was radicalizing youths. Some even accused him of helping to fund the war in Somalia. However, I must state that these are baseless claims. On the other hand, the second type of youth as we have mentioned have no idea of the Somali language, yet, they still become radicalized. So, how does this happen? Let it be known that even for the English speakers there are such materials that can turn an innocent Somali-youth into a kamikaze-like terrorist who is only quenched by the blood of the innocent. Interestingly, I have observed that these individuals are using a person by the name, “Shayk” Anwar al-Awlaki. He is an American-born of Yemeni decent who somehow became radicalized in a very strange way (properly due to the fact that most of what he knows about Islam is self-taught). This man openly promotes suicide-bombing and boldly claims that it is part of Jihad! He also started to interfere with the affairs of Somalia when al-Shabab came into the picture. And for this reason, he became well-respected by Somali fanatics everywhere. In his website, he gives them counsel and tells other Muslims to aid them in their “Jihad” against the “infidel” government of Shayk Sharif Ahmed. He further translated a book about “Jihad” written by, al-Qeada member named, Yusuf al-‘Uyaree (who was shot dead by Saudi security forces!). He is currently located in Yemen where he records lectures online in conference rooms. Uponing visiting his website, I was surprised as to how many Somali youth were listening to him. And surprisingly, many of the youth who left for Somalia were all fans of al-‘Awlaki. Thanks to this man, there are Somali youth who were on drugs six months ago and are now talking about martyrdom-operation through suicide bombings. For starters, one could observe the website called, al-qimmah, where Hassan Hussien Aadam and Anwar al-‘Awlaki are some of the all-time favorite speakers. Hassan Hussien Aadam wrote a lengthy treatise declaring the government of Somalia to be disbelievers and this can be viewed on that website for anybody who can read the Arabic language. In addition, there are letter of thanks from al-Shabab leaders to Mr. Anwar Awlaki thanking him for his counsel. WHO IS WHO? So who are these individuals and what organization do they operate in? Allow me to introduce the ‘Wolf in Sheep’s clothing.’ In my research, I also focused on the different groups that exist amongst the Somalis. There are four main groups, and they are: a.) al-‘Itisaam (formerly al-Itihaad) b.) Soofiyah (they call themselves ahl Sunnah wa Jama’ah) c.) al-Islaah (former al-Ikhwaan al-Muslimeen) d.) Salafiyah (opponents call them, salafiyah Jadeedah). The aforementioned groups all control different mosques in the Somali communities throughout the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. However, our main concern is the group called al-‘Itisaam, as all of the youth who went to Somalia for “Jihad” are linked to their mosques. None of the other groups supported these fanatics. It is also interesting to note that out of all of these groups, al-‘Itisaam are the ones who are pushing an agenda and that they are also the most organized in comparison to the rest of the other groups. For example, a number of years back, they were able to unite all of the mosques that were controlled by them via what they called, “Golaha Imaamyada” (lit. The Umbrella of Imaams). In this way, if something was to happen to any of them, they could hire powerful lawyers to represent them through the support of the community. Like it or not, Al-‘Itisaam are the wolf in Sheep’s clothing. They have exported the ideas of Hasan Daahir Aweys, Hasan Turki, Hassan Hussien Aadam and the rest of the preachers of hate to the innocent Somali youth in the west. That is way I am not surprised when FBI is questioning them at the airport. AL-‘ITISAAM DECIEVES PEOPLE Recently when all this came to light, they (al-‘Itisaam members in US) started to condemn these youth and free themselves of their actions. How can they condemn terrorism in America while they are committing it in Somalia? Many mothers are without their children now and members of al-‘Itisaam continue to enjoy wearing their white thobes with nice salaries. This is injustice. And quite honestly, I don’t blame the mosque per say as it is only a physical structure, but I blame those men who are hiding inside the mosques claiming to be community leaders. Let me reiterate that the mosques were established as places of worship and not for some ‘secret club’ with a political agenda. Recently in Columbus, Ohio and many other cities in North America, they (al-‘Itisaam) started to make all this noise when one of their leaders was detained by authorities while he was on his way to “hajj.” They organized a community forum in Columbus, Ohio and they were spreading and saying that, “our ‘ulemaa our being harassed by authorities.” If you ask me, here is what they’re trying to do: They are trying to make it seem as if authorities are hunting for Somalis so that they can have the community to fight for them; I say nay, authorities are hunting for people that they suspect of being part of al-‘Itisaam and not the common Somalis. Hence, they want to use Somalis as scapegoat. I say this because we should ask ourselves the following question, how come all of the other Somalis who were going to Hajj were not detained? I hope we all see the point now here. CONCLUSION AND FINAL REMARKS Finally, al-‘Itisaam has always operated as a ‘secret club’ within Somali communities. They have managed to take our sons away right before our very eyes and turn them into extremists by exporting the preachers of hate. We should resist this and expose them in every opportunity we get because it is true as the saying goes; they are indeed a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Readers should also be aware that they have recently changed the name of their organization to the “Hizbu Da’wah” after they started to come under fire from all directions, we should not be fooled by this. We should prevent them from our gatherings and our communities. I advise my fellow Somalis to wake up from their slumber and realize that there are people who are pulling the rug under our feet. I suggest that we should purge these people from our mosques and places of worship as they are nothing but trouble. These are the very people that have destroyed our country and the blood of our innocent people is on their hands. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abu Raas Hasan is young a true Somali in every sense of the word. Key Rwanda genocide suspect arrested in Uganda, officials say

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News suspect arrested in Uganda KAMPALA, Uganda — Interpol agents have arrested one of the most wanted suspects in Rwanda’s 1994 genocide who is accused of sending soldiers to execute the Rwandan queen, officials said Tuesday. Officers of the Lyon, France-based global police agency arrested former Rwandan deputy intelligence chief, Idelphonse Nizeyimana, on Monday in Kampala, said Uganda’s government spokesman Fred Opolot. Ugandan police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba said Nizeyimana is believed to have entered Uganda through neighboring Congo using fake travel documents. Nizeyimana will be flown to Arusha, Tanzania, where the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda sits. More than half a million members of the Tutsi ethnic minority and moderates from the Hutu majority were slaughtered during the 100-day Rwandan genocide in 1994. Rwanda’s genocide began hours after a plane carrying President Juvenal Habyarimana was shot down. The former captain in Rwanda’s army is wanted on charges of genocide by the tribunal. Under the U.S. State Department’s Rewards for Justice program, there is a reward of up to $5 million on Nizeyimana’s head for any information leading to his capture. According to a 2000 indictment prepared by the tribunal, Nizeyimana is alleged to have formed secret units of soldiers that carried out the execution of the then Queen of Rwanda, Rosalie Gicanda, a symbolic figure for all Tutsis, among other prominent Tutsis. Nizeyimana is the second high-profile arrest of a key Rwanda genocide suspect in two months. A former mayor, Gregoire Ndahimana, appeared before the tribunal last week after being captured in Congo in August. Ndahimana had been on the run for 15 years and had a similar bounty on his head, but no one claimed it when he was arrested. With Nizeyimana’s arrest, 11 top suspects remain with similar bounties on their heads for their alleged roles in the 1994 genocide. Ethiopia working to free 200 detainees in Libya

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia is working to free some 200 of its nationals who have been detained for two years in Libya, an Ethiopian government official said on Tuesday. Ethiopian media have printed a petition by the detainees who say they were arrested in Libya en route to other nations where they were seeking work, and are being held in bad conditions. The prisoners said their passports and money were confiscated. "We committed no crime. We were in Libya to transit to other countries where we could find work," the petition said. Mebrat Beyene, head of diaspora affairs at Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry, told Reuters that the government was working with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the authorities in Tripoli to secure their release. A diplomat at the Libyan embassy in Addis Ababa denied that the Ethiopians had been put in jail. "Those without proper documents who entered Libya illegally were rounded up and put in camps until their departure home can be arranged," said the diplomat, who declined to be named

Ambitious Campaign Targets Tackling High Child Mortality Rate

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News
Addis Ababa — As the country lingers within top ten countries having an 'absolute highest' number of children death in the world, a new campaign entitled 'EVERY ONE' targets to end this rate by 2015. A report from Save the Children placed Ethiopia among the six countries where more than half of world's child death occurs, with others includes- India, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan and China. Further more, one in eight Ethiopian children die before reaching their 5th birthday, and 120,000 children die in the first month of life- often for treatable diseases like measles, pneumonia, complications during and post delivery, malaria, and diarrhoeal, with the last four ranking top four killers of children under-5. The 5-year campaign, launched last Sunday by Save the Children and its partners, sought to educate and inform women and their families on the importance of seeking professional care before, during and after the birth of a baby. Additionally, Save the Children said the Campaign is focused on mobilizing resources from donors, the private sector and individuals to support the implementation of key policies and programs that would radically reduce newborn, child and maternal deaths. Secretary General of Save the Children, Charlotte Petri Gomitzka dubbed the campaign as "the most ambitious campaign" in the history of Save the Children in Ethiopia, where she said "one of the toughest places to be a child." Together, she said "we will create a powerful movement proving that every one of us plays an important role in saving children's lives in a country." Thus, the campaign was intended to ensure world leaders stick to their promises to cut child deaths by 5 million a year by 2015, she said. Director General of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention General Directorate of Ethiopian Ministry of Health, Kesetebernan Admassu (Dr.), also said the country needs to build on the recent success in decreasing under-five mortality rate. "While we have made some important inroads into reducing under-five mortality - we still have ways to go" he said. Ethiopia has decreased under-five mortality rate by 40% since 1990, but reports claim high population growth rate (2.9%), inadequate food security and nutrition interventions and inadequate health care system, mean that the number of children actually being saved each year has been decreasing. "Today we still have newborns, children and women dying from diseases that we know how to treat and cure," said Dr. Kesetebernan, adding with the support and commitment of EVERY ONE Ethiopia can achieve MDG 4 and 5 by 2015. In addition, he expressed government's commitment to revolutionize country's health care infrastructure and delivery systems with the coming Health Sector Development Plan IV. Relevant Links East Africa Ethiopia Children UNICEF Ethiopia Country Director, Ted Chaiban said the way to this campaign in Ethiopia to succeed would be to support the health extension programme. "The health extension programme is the key mechanism for delivering low-cost interventions that can save the lives of thousands of children and women every year in Ethiopia," he said He also added that the mechanism should have adequate referral linkages to functional health centers and hospitals in the country. As Save the Children launches its biggest campaign to date, it estimates that an additional $40 billion - less than half the amount spent on bottled water each year - needs to be spent annually to reduce the numbers of children dying needlessly. But the global survey conducted in wealthy and developing countries reveals almost half of those surveyed (48%) thinks it costs at least $400 billion - to make the difference.

More People Fleeing Eritrea (Lack of Political stablity-Guman rights watch)

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

Eritrean Refugees: Extensive detention, torture of citizens and prolonged military conscription prompted increasing numbers of Eritrean to flee the country, Human Rights Watch says in a report released Thursday in London. "Eritrea's government is turning the country into a giant prison," said Georgette Gagnon, Africa director in Human Right Watch. "Eritrea should immediately account for hundreds of (disappeared prisoners) and open its jails to independent scrutiny." Human Right Watch called the United States and European Union to coordinate with the UN and the African Union to resolve regional tensions and ensure that development aid to Eritrea is linked to the progress on human rights. The EU recently approved a €122 million assistance package to Eritrea despite concerns that development projects in Eritrea are carried out by conscript or prison labor in violation of international law, the human rights organization noted. Human Right Watch says repression in Eritrea creates human right crisis and called some countries to cease forced returns of Eritrean refugees, asylum seekers to their homeland, given the risk of torture. Because of the risk of mistreatment faced by those who are returned, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has advised against deporting anyone of the Eritrean refugees to Eritrea, including rejected asylum seekers. The UNHCR and the government of Sudan launched a joint registration operation for ten of thousands Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees living in eastern Sudan. The registration official started on March 2008 estimated more than 133,000 refugees will benefit from the exercise. Out of the 133,000 Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees, 95,000 live in open camps in Kassala, Gadaref, Jezzira, Sinar and the Red Sea States of Eastern and Central Sudan, while about 38,000 live in urban and rural areas of these states. The capital city of Sudan, Khartoum is said to be hosting close to 30,000 Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees. By registering these populations, both the government of Sudan and UNHCR hope to update the refugee statistics and to determine the best solution based on the refugees' profile. Some will require continued humanitarian support because of their vulnerability. Others may require self-reliance support while a number may be in need of resettlement in a third country because they can neither remain in Sudan nor repatriate. Most importantly, it will translate into reconfirmed refugee status for nearly 70,000 Eritrean who lost it following the application of the 2002-2004 Cessation Clause. The registration will also take into account the arrival of asylum seekers who totalled up 10,000 since the beginning of last year. Nearly 90 percent of them originating from Eritrea cited forced army enrolment as their main reason for flight. Others are from Ethiopia and Somalia. The last general registration took place in 2001. After being in exile for four decades, Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees are among the most protracted refugee populations in the world. UNHCR has recently signed an agreement with three organizations aimed at ensuring the protection needs of refugees and asylum seekers in Libya. This is in line with UNHCR's responsibility to advocate for better protection of refugees in the context of mixed asylum and migration flows. The agreement is part of UNHCR's work under its Ten-Point Plan of Action on Refugee Protection and Mixed Migration, which sets out a number of areas where the agency believes initiatives are called for and where it can contribute some expertise in this challenging area. There are currently some 9,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Libya – mainly Iraqis and Palestinians, and also Eritrean, Sudanese, Somalis, Liberians, Sierra Leonean and Congolese from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. "We welcome the decision of the Libyan authorities not to deport Eritrean asylum seekers," said Radhouane Nouicer, chief of UNHCR's Middle East and North Africa bureau. "We are aware of the challenges in dealing with mixed flows of irregular immigrants and asylum seekers, and are appreciative of the Libyan government's efforts to address some of these issues in consultation with our office in Tripoli," he added. Egypt has seen a surge of Eritrean refugees entering the country illegally in recent months by land from Sudan or directly from Eritrea via the Red Sea. The Egyptian authorities on 27 February 2008 had suspended access of UNHCR protection staff to asylum seekers in detention. Since then, UNHCR has been in continuous contact with relevant authorities through official communications and meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, requesting access to asylum seekers in detention to evaluate their need for international protection as well as to identify humanitarian solutions to their plight. UNHCR welcomes the decision of the Egyptian authorities for UNHCR to have unhindered access to asylum seekers in detention centres in Egypt and to resume refugee status determination interviews.

Call on US and Canadian Authorities to Deny Visit by Ogaden Genocide Perpetrator

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

Join Press Release by: East African Human Rights Coalition & Solidarity Movement for new Ethiopia Da’ud Mohamed Ali, governor of the Ogaden region of eastern Ethiopia, is heading up a delegation that is expected to tour North America, which includes a planned visit to Minnesota this weekend and on to Canada next week. Why Minnesota? Minnesota is now home to more Somali Ogadens than anywhere else outside of Ethiopia. We believe that if the US and the Canadian public knew more about this man and his central complicity in committing massive atrocities against his own people, they would not only be outraged; they would never allow him entrance into either of these free countries. In March of 2009, Dr. Gregory Stanton, president of Genocide Watch, has called Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles’s regime “serial killers” and has referred the case on to the International Criminal Court to consider doing an in-depth investigation, particularly citing the case of the Ogaden region. Base on Da’ud’s perpetration of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in the Ogaden region (Somali Regional State), we are hoping—that the US and Canadian Governments will deny him a visa. Da’ud has been connected to massive crimes against humanity, war crimes and the destruction of livelihood, as documented by human rights organizations and humanitarian groups working in the area. Food, medical aid and other humanitarian assistance have been blocked and thousands were displaced by Da’ud’s orders. Recently 42 international organizations have been kicked out of the country, allegedly for providing information on the human rights situation, later used in the US State Department’s disparaging human rights report on Ethiopia. The genocide and dictatorship by a corrupt and brutal government under the leadership of Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, known for using tactics to suppress the people while pretending to be a partner in the War on Terror. Zenawi uses ethnic “puppets,” like Da’ud, to carry out schemes usually attached to the exploitation of natural resources; in this case, the large gas and oil reserves in the region. Americans and Canadians should shun any support of such genocide perpetrators and not give them a voice or a platform to intimidate and silence those among us. This coalition of concerned American and Canadian are asking that the both goverments exercise their established laws against human rights violators in respect to Da’ud and his delegation, excluding them from entry. Indeed it will give voice to the silenced victims in Ethiopia—something that would indeed be an encouraging source of hope to some who have been discouraged by US and Canadian quietness of this terrorist regime. Ethiopians have been divided by ethnicity, region, political view, religion and other differences, but those in this new coalition hope that by coming together in solidarity around principles of putting “humanity before ethnicity” or any other difference; that they can better create society that is free, democratic, just, reconciled and prosperous. we are working together to bring about the transformation based on the principle that “no one will be free until all are free.” This is the only way to break the cycle of dictatorship, injustice, ethnic conflict, poverty, exploitation and corruption that is now rampant on the continent. Some of the crimes that Da’ud is directly linked to include: · Forcible mobilization of civil servants to pick up arms and fight the ONLF. Da’ud Mohamed, as a party deputy leader, was in charge of the campaign to mobilize untrained civil servants to face highly trained armed groups. In an article in the New York Times, see http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/15/world/africa/15ethiopia.html , it was written “Anybody who works for the government — teachers, doctors, clerks, administrators — has to join a militia,” In the same reported that “Several Western officials say they are alarmed about this new strategy, especially when the first signs maybe emerging of a humanitarian crisis that aid officials predicted over the summer.” · In May 2007, Da’ud Mohamed called for and chaired all civil servant staff meeting which was held at Abdulmajid Hussein Teacher Training Collegall, and in that meeting, ordered all the present civil servants to be transported to the frontline to fight armed groups. Some of them have been killed, others have fled to neighboring countries and those who refused to fight were jailed. · In October 2008, Mr Daud, accompanied by the head of the regional security Abdi Omar, (also known Abdi Iley), toured Fiq, Korahe and Degahbour zones, to implement similar operations. In Degahbour, he ordered the salaries of Gunagado district to be frozen until they captured or killed the leader of ONLF, whom he believed was in the area at that time. · In December 2008, the army and the militia, with the approval of the Regional Security Council Chair Mr. Daud Mohamed, massacred 37 unarmed civilians and politicians including Qanyare, a member of Gursum district parliament, Ali Heydar- head of Biyo Ade Kebele administration and Omer Aw Ibrahim- a known elder in the village. Mr Mohamed as the head the Security Council that leads and overseas the military and militia operations in the region approved all these operations. · In January 2009, hundreds of civil servants were dismissed for not taking up arms against rebel groups by the order of the regional president. In its 130 page report supplemented with satellite images of the burnt villages, the Human Rights Watch said “During the peak of the army’s counterinsurgency campaign from June to September 2007, witnesses described how Ethiopian troops forcibly displaced entire rural communities and destroyed dozens of rural villages; executed at least 150 civilians, sometimes in demonstration killings to terrorize those communities suspected of supporting the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF); and arbitrarily detained hundreds of civilians in military barracks where they experienced beatings, torture, and widespread rape and other forms of sexual violence.” (http://www.hrw.org/en/reports/2008/06/12/collectivepunishment Buildings in Labigah town, in the Ogaden, are seen before their destruction in this handout satellite image taken February 2008. Satellite images confirm reports that the TPLF/EPRDF military have burned towns and villages in the remote Ogaden region of eastern Ethiopia, the American Association for the Advancement of Science reported on eight sites in the rocky, arid region, which borders Somalia, have clear signs of burning and other destruction, the AAAS Science and Human Rights Program said. REUTERS/American Association for the Advancement of Science/Digital Globe/Handout. Amnesty International, Ogaden Human Rights Committee, the US state department and other international institutions have also documented the severe human rights violations in Ogaden (Seehttp://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/hrrpt/2008/af/119001.htm, http://www.amnesty.ca/resource_centre/news/view.php?load=arcview&article=4046&c=Resource+Centre+News, http://www.ogadenrights.org/THE_DIRE.htm, ). In October 2008 Douglas Alexander, the international development secretary, visited Ogaden and experienced human rights violations in Ogaden first hand after malnourished children and mothers were forcefully removed from the Hospital he visited in Kabridehar region (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/africa/article4965305.ece) For more information please contact Mr. Yassin Kassim; Executive Director East African Human Rights Coalition Email, Yassin@solidaritymovement.org Or Mr. Obang Metho Executive Director Solidarity Movement for new Ethiopia Email: Obang@solidaritymovement.org

Tune, others affected by Ethiopian murder-suicide

www.nazrett.com Home of Ethiopian News and Blog Breaking News

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia -- Most of Monday, Sept. 29 was a normal day in the lives of a group of Ethiopian marathon runners coached by Hadji Adilo. "We did a session in the morning and the athletes trained privately in the afternoon," recalled the marathon-runner-cum-coach during a telephone interview late last week. "Many of the runners in the group were preparing for marathons throughout the world. Everything was fine and peaceful. Everyone was concentrated and we had a nice day." After another session in the afternoon, many of the athletes went home to rest and recover from a hard day of training. Their lives were then dramatically altered after they discovered some tragic news at about 9 p.m. The parents and sister of one of the group's top runners, Leila Aman, who were also the mother and father in law to 2008 Boston Marathon and Houston Marathon champion Dire Tune, were shot and killed by Aman's brother in-law. The incident has forced some of the runners to stop training during a period of mourning. The runners are also thinking about canceling competitive plans this fall. Tune is considering the New York City Marathon on Nov. 1. "I still cannot believe what happened," said Adilo, who received a phone call about the shooting from fellow coach and agent Gemedu Dedefo, the husband of Ethiopian elite marathon runner Leila Aman (2:27.18 in the 2004 Berlin Marathon). "When Hadji called to tell me, I thought he was not serious," says Kassim Adilo, a brother to Hadji Adilo and a direct cousin of Leila Aman and a top class marathon runner himself with a personal best of 2:10.20. "I remember Leila telling us that he had often threatened her, but I never thought it would come down to this." Because Adilo's family and running group based in Addis Ababa consists of more than 20 people, it took about an hour for all members of the family to hear about the incident and prepare to leave for Assela. "We received another call telling us that the mother passed away and we were really disturbed," says Kassim Adilo. Starting their journey from the home of Leila Aman, the group headed to Assela and got the second phone call just before they reached the city at 11 p.m. that the sister had also passed away. By the time they got to the murder scene at around midnight, they heard that Aman's father had died and that the brother-in-law had killed himself as well. "You do not know how to deal with such kind of situations," said Hadji Adilo. "I have never heard anything happening like this ever in Ethiopia and I do not think it matters how strong you are. Everyone has been affected by this." The group received more bad news when they arrived in Assela. "I was hoping that the children had not seen what happened," says Kassim Adilo. "But when we got back home [to the murder scene], the youngest child said to us "Baba [Daddy] came with a gun and boom, boom, boom he shot Mama [mother], Ababa [grandfather] and Emama [grandmother]. I fear for the kids. This is an experience that will stay with them forever." Police have not responded to repeated phone requests for comment. The tragedy has rocked what is considered one of Ethiopia's largest running dynasties. The central figure of this dynasty is Hadji Adilo, a former member of the Ethiopian National Team in the marathon before retiring in 2004 to take up coaching. Hadji Adilo convinced many of his siblings to take up the sport seriously, including brothers Kassim and Hussein, sister Radiya, and cousin Kelil and Leila Aman. Many members of the dynasty have married runners. Kassim Adilo married Houston Marathon champion Teyiba Erkesso (2:24.18); Hadji's wife is African 3000m steeplechase champion Zemzem Ahmed; and Kelil Aman is the husband of Tune. "We have a large family and everyone is either a professional runner or wants to become one," says Kassim. Hadji and Kassim have seven brothers and sisters, while the Aman family has 16 children. The tragedy has affected many of the runners who are torn between grief and their sport. "Everyone has been deeply affected by this," says Hadji. "We live as one big family and it is difficult to concentrate on running when you face this kind of problem." Marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie even stopped by to pay his respects. "I happened to be in Assela and was really shocked when I heard about it,” he said. “This is something that is very difficult to forget."
